A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
