Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Police then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
An important political figure stated the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
