Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
