As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
