Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
