Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
